Prayer Ministry
What is Prayer Ministry?

Prayer ministry is a work of grace; one person reaching out to another through love and prayer, trusting in the truth of God's Word. Prayer ministry is by its very nature a work of the Holy Spirit bringing healing through prayer to the heart, soul and body of believers and non-believers. Often prayer ministers are lay ministers who sense an anointed call from God to help others. A prayer minister's love and relationship with our Heavenly Father is paramount. Without this spiritual love and relationship, we will try to minister out of our own efforts that may bring harm instead of healing. This loving relationship with the Lord is built through embracing the love of The Father and through sincere praise and worship to God. A prayer minister does not minister out of perfection, but out of our love for God and for others. One's own emotional healing prepares him/her to pour out to others through their own healed wounds. "....freely you have received, freely give." Matt. 8:10

It is important for prayer ministers to work within a group under the guidance and authority of a pastor, a church, or an organized Christian ministry that can offer sound spiritual leadership and accountability. "Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief; for that is unprofitable for you." Heb. 13:17 One goal of a prayer minister should be to build good relationships with likeminded friends and have a life that is transparent. Every person who feels that they have to hide behind any sin or shame will be ruled by that hidden sin and/or shame. A prayer minister must be free to minister spiritual freedom to others who are in spiritual bondage. A prayer minister operates out of a secure relationship with God and others. He/she learns how to pray using different kinds of prayers. "And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayer and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints." Eph. 6:18 "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love." Eph. 4:2

A prayer minister has personal God given boundaries that are a protection for the minister as well as the client. A prayer minister guards his/her own heart against being drawn into personal attachments and/or transferences. This can be spiritually draining and discouraging and can hinder one's future effectiveness. A prayer minister depends on God to heal and carry the burdens of the hurting and broken hearted. This is especially important for those who have a tendency or gift of burden bearing. Prayer ministers must be people who can be trusted. Confidentiality is vital for the minister as well as the client. A prayer ministers listens and learns to ask pertinent questions to help the client get to the deep roots that cause pain, guilt, fear, anxiety, etc. It takes time to listen and discern the deep needs of others. Prayer ministry is not counseling as it is commonly understood regarding the work of professionals. This is not to say that some professionals don't do prayer ministry. A prayer minister never judges or makes accusations regarding the client or their life's hurts and wounds. Judgements and accusations heap more hurts, guilt and pain to an already hurting person. A sincere, conscientious prayer minister will continually desire to know more and find more resources to enhance their knowledge of God's Word and of His work in the hearts and minds of hurting, wounded people. This is a heart ministry that connects others to the heart of a Savior who loves them unconditionally forever. What a privilege.
